Ricardo Avena, MD, FACS

Dr. Ricardo Avena is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Born and raised in Mexico City, Dr. Avena attended medical school at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Upon graduation, Dr. Avena received his certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. He completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Connecticut in Hartford, Connecticut.

Dr. Ricardo Avena is a dedicated surgeon specializing in complex injuries and factures as well as an educator in the medical field helping support the new generation of surgeons. He is known among his patients as an expert in injury care and a knowledgeable partner throughout the recovery process.

Certifications

Dr. Avena has a wide range of knowledge and experience reflected in his certifications. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also has the Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand by the American Board of Surgery, giving him specialized training in caring for injuries of the hand and wrist.

Education

Dr. Avena is native to Mexico City where he received his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and his certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. Then moving to the United States’ east coast, he completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Connecticut in Hartford and his three-year post-doctoral Surgery Research fellowship at the VA Medical Center and George Washington University in Washington D.C. Finally, he completed additional fellowships in Critical Care at the University of Connecticut and Hand and Microsurgery at the Kleinert Institute and University of Louisville in Kentucky.

Experience

Dr. Avena is dedicated to ongoing research into hand and wrist surgery, having published several nationally recognized research papers during his fellowship in Washington D.C. Along with his private practice at the Regional Hand Center, he is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of California San Francisco in Fresno, CA. There, he teaches new surgeons using his vast industry knowledge and latest research insights.

Leisure

Dr. Avena is married with two children and enjoys the outdoors with his family. He also enjoys a variety of sports including sailing, swimming, horseback riding, and skiing.
